Google Search: INURL

The INURL command finds websites with the word in the URL and contains the information in the website.
Layout
inurl:URLletters search words
Note: No space before or after the colon (:).
URLletters is the text that must be in the URL to be a hit
Search Words are the words to look for inside that website.

Example
inurl:k12 Ireland

This will look for websites that have the text k12 in the URL. When it finds websites with those letters in the URL, Google will then look for the word Ireland in those website.
Only websites with k12 in the URL and Ireland somewhere in the website will be hits.

Google Search: INFO

The Google Search INFO command will give you information about the website listed. You might wonder why you would want to know that. A family history or genealogical web site is usually run by a member of that family. Find out who it is and you might get to know and connect with a cousin!! What fun that would be!

Layout

info:www.website.com

Note: No space before or after the colon (:).

Example
info:www.rays-place.com

The screen below is the result from the above search.

Google Search: LINK

The LINK command finds websites linked to the website listed after the : colon.

Layout
link:www.website.com

Note: No space before or after the colon (:).

Example
link:www.rays-place.com

In this example, Google will list websites that have a link to the rays-place website. Web sites that are linking to this one might have additional information or similar information to the one you found information on.

Google Search: Related

Related finds websites related to the website listed.

I have a great website www.rays.place.com for finding Bancrofts in Massachuttes. I would like to know if there are other websites similar to the website. Related might help me with that.

Layout
related:www.website.com

Note: No space before or after the colon (:).

Example
related:www.rays-place.com

The results for the search above are some other great websites.

Search within one site only

SITE
SITE allows you to search in the listed website only, for something specific. All hits will only be from this website.

Search one webpage
If you want to search the webpage that is on the screen, use CTRL/F. This is nice and easy for one page, but only the current page, not a whole website.

Layout
site:www.website.com words to search

Note: No space before or after the colon (:).

There can be multiple words to searchMust be a website, a URL not an HTML file. Not a specific page so the URL can't end in .htm or .html.

Example
I have a great website with lots of Bancroft family births, marriages, and deaths. I would love to have a list of all of the Bancrofts from any page on this website. This is how I can.

site:www.rays-place.com/town/ma bancroft

This will list each time Google finds a Bancroft on any page on this URL. There are multiple pages under this URL.

There are 72 hits on this website

Each hit has the same website beginning:  www.rays-place.com/town/ma ....

Try with one of your websites. I would love to hear what you find!
Please: Post your results in the comments section below.

Google Search Handout

Google Drive handout coming

I have permission for all Google Doodles used in the handout.

Follow this blog for updates when I add a post.

1.2 Begin Googling

To begin using the Google search engine:

1. In the box, type the name, location, company or item you are looking for.
2. For this exercise, type in your first and last name. I would type in Lianne Kruger.
3. Hit the Enter key.
4. The picture below shows the results of typing in my name a few years ago.

Web sites are created daily therefore, the results change constantly.

NOTE:
Google does not differentiate between upper and lower case. It searches as if all text is in lower case.

Try:
Enter your name to see to search for pages with your name on it or others with a similar name.

3.0 Narrowing the results

When I type in my name the list of hits includes sites with my first name and other sites that only contains my last night. The sites at the top will contain both names.

To narrow the search we can put our name in quotes. Now it will only list sites that have our name as it shows inside the quotes.

"Lianne Kruger"

Now the hits will be for those sites that have both names and in that specific order.

If my name appears as the following, it will not be listed
"Kruger, Lianne"
The next lesson will help with this.

Google displays the first group of hits. If there is more than one page of hits, they will be displayed on following pages.

At the bottom of the results page the word Google appears. In Figure 2.1 the more o’s that appear in the word “Google”, the more results [or hits] available. The “o” related to the page number is in red while the other “o’s” are in yellow. There maybe more pages than are listed. As you click on the pages, the page numbers may change to indicate more pages.

New pages and new information is added to the Internet daily. Most of it is free. How do you find your ancestors in all that information?
