Z is for Zebras

Z is for Zebras and ZZZZZZs

Zebras

The decorations around our house indicate some of our ancestry. My husband's family is from South Africa. My husband never lived in South Africa but it is still part of his heritage. Therefore, we have items that indicate that heritage.

What about items that you have that have been handed down for a generation or more? Does your family know where they came from and why they are important? These are great topics to start making videos. Ask you family what object around the house they would like to know more about.

I hope that these videos have not put you to sleep and that you have thought of ideas for your family history. You could use an A to Z layout but you don't have to. Tell your story, tell your family's story on any topic at any time.

Side Note

If you look at the dates I uploaded the videos to YouTube you will see that they are not in order but if you view the A to Z Playlist the videos are in alphabetical order. Don't stress about having to upload them in a specific order. That is what Playlists are for.

Y is for Your Family

Y is Your Family History

This series of videos are ideas of topics in the hope that they will give you ideas of what to record in your family history as well as samples of layouts and colours. But... Make them personal by using yours and your family colours, designs, layouts and topics.

For privacy, I have not included names, dates, locations, addresses or photos of any living member of the family. Your videos should include all of those items to make your videos more personal and informative. They can be included because they will be on your own person private channel.

The videos are not perfect. They are meant to be simple because the emphasis is to record the history of the people and the family. The videos do not need to be long to share a memory that is important to someone or the whole family. What stands out to you? What do you remember? What made you laugh or cry? Above all else, have fun doing this! Involve the whole family. Get the kids to make their own.

This video includes the steps I took for each of these blog posts and videos, including how I made them transition to the next slide with the sound and hide the audio icon from the slides.

X is for eXile

In this video you will learn why family members were sometimes exiled to another room during meal time and who was the most to be exiled.

I used animation in PowerPoint to have the feet walk to the other room. I delayed when the animation started so that it would start when I was talking about walking. I also delayed the second set of footprints to start after the first one.

W is for WWII in the Netherlands

W is for WWII in the Netherlands.

My father in law was born and raised in the Netherlands. He lived there during WWII. Most of what he got to eat potatoes.

The Canadian soldiers liberated the Netherlands. They brought chocolate which they gave out tot he children. The Dutch were and are still grateful to the Canadians.

More information about his time in the Netherlands during the war is in the video.

V is for the VOC

V is for the VOC (Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie)

The VOC is known in the English world as The Dutch East Indian Company.

The British, Danish, French and Portuguese also had a East Indian Company so that can be confusing.

The video talks about what proceeded and how the VOC came to be at the Cape.

U is for Upset Stomachs

You might laugh at this title but this is very much part of our family history.

The stories I relate on the movie is how our kids get sick while driving every week for 8 years to church and on travelling for trips. Our children did not do well travelling until they were over 2 years old.

There are little stories similar to this in your family that should be recorded and can be done simply in PowerPoint, recording your voice or voices talking about it. This would be a good video to have all our kids talk about what they remember and how about how they felt.

T is for Transitions

Transitions is what is called when you are switching between slides. These can be used to open a video or between slides if you have multiple slides in a video.

This is the curtain transition.

This is the blinds transition.

The examples in the video have sound as well.

Sometimes no transition is better. The transition shouldn't distract from what you are sharing.

In the video, I also switched the photo and description to give you a chance to decide where you like the photo if you have text. Also, do you like the switching back and forth or do you prefer the photo always on the same side instead.

S is for Songs

S is for songs and music of any kind and your family.

What songs are the favourites of your family or a specific family member? or what genre of music?

When did they start liking the songs/music? When did they first hear the music?

Did they grown up listening to the music from their parents?

Are there a family traditions that are song or music related?

I give examples of all three questions in the video.

For example, I love Rachmaninoff's music.

I was first introduced to his music in 1980 when I watched the Somewhere in Time movie.

I love all of his music not just the music from this movie. Listening to the music relaxes me and gives me energy at the same time.

Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini: Variation 18. I like all the variations.

Piano Concerto No. 2

At Christmas time we would listen to Mannheim Steamroller's Fresh Aire Christmas albums.

In addition to the regular Christmas music our children remember this as a family tradition.

R is for Recipes

R is for

Food is very much a family tradition. Many happy memories happen around the kitchen or dining table.

Recipes indicate family heritage by the type of food. I grew up on very unspicy files where pepper was the hottest item from British food heritage. Within a year or two after being married, I was eating curry and Nasi Goring. These are Dutch and South African food from my husband's family traditions. These food actually originated in Indian and came to these countries through the VOC (the Dutch East India Company). Check out the second video in the South Africa History playlists for a little history of the VOC and South Africa.

I have created a private blog which has the family recipes on it and is only shared with the family. Our children can add new recipes they have found and whenever they need a recipe they just go to the blog. They don't need to text me or another member for it. I have scanned in pages from their grandmother so they have their writing as well on the blog.

Q is for Quotes

Q is for Quote

What about a video of favourite quotes? I have a little book that has favourite quotes of my grandmother. There are multiple quotes per page. I will take the scanned book and put a few pages into a video and read them. She is not available for me to record her saying them or telling me why she liked the quote or what it meant to her.

Each slide would be a different quote. Record your family member saying it or record yourself. I used another favourite quote of mine in the L is for Love video.

Include who the author is, when the author said it and where did they say or write it? Was it a movie or TV Show? Was it in a book? Or on social media?

This is my grandmother's quote booklet that I talk about in the video.

P is for Photo Bomb

P is for Photo bomb.

This is a very simple video with just one slide but it tells a story. Videos do not have to be long. This didn't take long to create but the information about this event can relate much family history, with a little fun as well.

If this video was just for the family to view, then a date and location of the photo would be included, as well as more specific information of the names of each person, where they were going, how the boys felt about the trip and what was going on at the time of the photo.

N is for Nuts

N is for Nuts
More specifically Walnuts.

Walnut trees are all over Utah. English/Persian and Black walnut trees.

Our back neighbour had one or two in their yard. This video talks about two memories our children had of collecting and eating these nuts.

This is a simple, short video but it was a fun memory our children had of living in Utah. I also researched to include what kinds of walnut trees are in the area we lived.

M is for Mexican Marigolds

This video is about a school project done by one of my daughters. She talks about her project. She recorded her description of the item. This video is to give the idea that the videos can also be about our children not just our ancestors.

Her recording is over 3 slides. She did not make a separate recording for each slide. This shows that you don't have to have a whole bunch of pictures to make a movie and record a history.

A video would usually include the daughter's name, the school, the teacher, the city/town and any other person information. This was not included in my example for privacy.

Genealogy

I am on the board and CFO of mitoYDNA.org and currently President of Alberta Genealogical Society.

I researched my paternal grandmother's line to the first three white landowners of Canada in the 80's. I began genealogy going on genealogy trips in Ontario, England, and Scotland at graveyards with my mother starting at age 7 on. As a teenager, I sat in front of a microfilm reader with a list of names every Saturday at an FHL while my mother volunteered helping others.

I have spoken at Genealogical conferences and sessions at RootsTech (UT), FamilyRoots (UT), The Genealogy Show (in Birmingham, UK) as well as in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Ogden, and Ontario.
